Pacific Grove Author Promotes Two New Releases B Y R ENE E B R I NCK S T ravel and history have long fascinated Pacific Grove author (avid Laws. So, when the pandemic kept him at home, Laws examined those topics through a local lens. -n his latest book, “Secret Monterey A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure,” Laws explores 4 unusual and under-the-ra- dar stories—from why Monterey has multiple matching (ennis the Menace statues to which four nations have flown their flags over town. Each vignette includes photos and practical sightseeing tips. “-t’s a handy format for somebody who is wandering around town or is tired of standard travel guide suggestions,” says Laws, who has also heard from lifelong residents delighted to learn new facts about their hometown. “Secret Monterey” holds a special significance for Laws, who penned the book as his wife, .ean, wrote her own. She finished “The Mystery of the Mystery Writer’s Mysterious (eath” shortly before cancer ended her life.
