SHORT CUTS NEIGHBORS Culinar y Tour Marks 25 Years of Good Taste B Y R ENE E B R I NCK S E van Oakes first heard the term “agritour - ism” in the 1990s, while working for a winery in Australia. After moving to Monterey County for a 9niversity of California research scientist role in 199 , he started outlining his own farm treks. As Ag:enture Tours Consulting celebrates 2 years, Oakes has expanded his menu of wine tasting, sightseeing and agricultural education outings. A tasting tour introduced this summer samples local flavors like artichokes, berries and baked goods, while classic excursions provide a behind-the-scenes look at area vineyards and vegetable farms. “Travelers are amazed at the diverse crops grown here, the advanced technologies of the ag industry, and the way that local farms supply super-fresh, high-quality food and wine for restaurants and hotels. From an economic standpoint, all these businesses help support each other,” says Oakes, who offers van tours, walking tours and step-on guide services. Thanks to broad industry knowledge and close ties with producers, Oakes can tailor experiences to various interests. “No two tours are ever the same,” he says. “When guests come to Monterey County, their hotel is going to be fantastic. The food and wine they’re getting is fantastic. And - want my tour to be the thing that they remember the most. -’m really trying to elevate their visit.” For more information, visit www.agventuretours. com or call 831/761-8463. 80 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • F A L L 2 0 2 2 Photo: Kelli Uldall
